About Kranji Marshes
It is the largest area of Singapore with freshwater swamps. It is part of the Sungei Buloh wetlands and is a sanctuary for various flora and fauna. Mangroves, streams, trees, and jungle surround the 56 hectares it occupies.
The swamps are the habitat of monitor lizards, crocodiles, crabs, various birds, and mudfish. If you love hiking in Singapore, this is one of the places to visit.
How long is this hike?
This hike is not that long; it takes a maximum of one and a half hours to discover the area, including stopping at the tower to watch the birds.
The paths are well-marked and can be visited and accessed very easily. Compared to Sungei Buloh, a few kilometers from here and with 130 hectares, the park is relatively small but worth a visit if you are in the area.
How to get there?
The Kranji Marshes are a few kilometers from Sungei Buloh Wetland Park, northwest of Singapore.
There are several options for getting there. You can get to the Kranji metro station and take a taxi (Grab), which will cost about SGD 10 and take you directly to the Kranji Marshes gate.
Another option is to take the Kranji Farm Shuttle (SGD5) from Kranji MRT and get off at Kranji Marshes.
Some tips for this hike
This hike in Kranji Marshes is a round trip along the same path. Carry enough water and a cap or hat for sun protection, as some areas lack shade.
The park is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the visitor center has restrooms and a vending machine. Combine this remote hike with a visit to Sungei Buloh.
Is it easy to navigate?
The walk is relatively easy, making it suitable for children, but the path does have rocks and many stairs leading to the top of the tower. This adds a bit of adventure and variety to the hike.
Despite its small size, the park can be fully explored in just over an hour. Its compact nature allows for a quick yet fulfilling visit, perfect for a short outing.

Upon entering, you will find the Visitor Center with a small explanatory area about the swamps. This section provides information on the ecosystems, animals, and plants that inhabit the area.

Shaded Path and Bird Symphony
The path is paved and shaded by immense trees, which provide a cool and comfortable walk and create a serene atmosphere, perfect for enjoying nature.
As you walk, enjoy the symphony of birds. You’ll hear various songs, adding to the peaceful experience and making the journey more enjoyable.
Rest Stops and Directions
You will pass several covered huts named after birds, such as the Weaver Shelter and the Woodpecker Shelter. These provide perfect spots to take a break and relax.
At a certain point, you’ll come across an intersection. To continue your exploration, take the path to the left towards West Marsh and Turut Woods.
Ascending the Raptor tower
To reach the Raptor Tower, you must cross a path with large rocks. This adds a bit of adventure to your hike and prepares you for the climb.
The ascent involves some spiral stairs, but it’s not dangerous as everything is well protected. The 15-meter-high tower offers a panoramic view of the swamps and Kranji Reserve.
Observation from the Tower
At the top, you will be rewarded with a 360-degree view of the surrounding area. The height provides a unique perspective on the landscape.
From the top, you can observe the treetops and the diverse variety of birds that inhabit this place. It’s a perfect spot for birdwatching and taking in the natural beauty.
Moorhen Blind Shelter
After descending from the tower, you’ll pass a stream with lotus flowers, cross a wooden bridge, and walk until you find the Morhen Blind, a birdwatching refuge. Always check for hidden animals like snakes before sitting.
You will also see a sign warning about the presence of crocodiles. At a certain point, the road ends and is closed, though it’s unclear if this is permanent or temporary.
End of This Hike
To return, follow the same path you took to get here. Cross back past the Raptor Tower and navigate the cobblestone path once more.
Continue along the long, paved route shaded by trees, listening to the birds’ songs until you reach the park exit. This retraces your steps, ensuring a familiar and pleasant return journey.
Transportation to Sungei Buloh
If you combine your visit with Sungei Buloh, consider ordering a Grab or Gojek taxi. The ride is convenient and costs around 8 dollars, making it affordable.
Alternatively, you could take the shuttle, though it can be unreliable. We waited a long time, and it never arrived, which might affect your plans.

Biking and Path Conditions
At the exit, bicycles are available for rent, offering another way to reach Sungei Buloh. However, remember the heat, which can be intense, especially during midday.
Additionally, the path to Sungei Buloh is not very scenic. It is primarily a track, which may not be the most enjoyable route for a bike ride.
